During National Smile Month, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) conducted a survey of its members to determine which Hollywood stars and professional athletes have the most glamorous grins. Who were the winners? Halle Berry and Julia Roberts were the female star smiles. Hilary Duff was the "best of" teen celebrities and Maria Sharapova was voted best female athlete smile. On the masculine side of the equation, Matthew McConaughey and Tiger Woods scored big.
But don’t think a fabulous smile is reserved for only the rich and famous. According to research conducted by Beall Research & Training of Chicago, a new smile will make the average guy or gal not only more attractive, but more intelligent, interesting, successful and wealthy. An independent study done on behalf of the AACD proves it. Pictures of eight individuals, some with cosmetic dentistry, some without—were shown to over 500 Americans who were deemed a statistically valid cross section of the population. None of the pictured smiles featured rotten or missing teeth and the respondents were not told that they were looking at dentistry. They were asked to quickly judge those pictures on ten distinct qualities. The results were surprising and are featured on the AACD website.
"Based on a lot of interaction with happy patients, we were expecting this type of difference in attractiveness and popularity with the opposite sex," said Dr. Marty Zase, President of AACD, "but to have large gains in how successful, intelligent, interesting and wealthy patients appeared after cosmetic dentistry caught even us by surprise.
We’ve been telling people that a beautiful smile was a great investment in their future. Now we have independent evidence."
